Never underestimate the value of the space beneath your bed. Even if your room has ample cupboards, shoes and bags seem to gravitate to that forgotten area, so it makes sense to use it properly. Standard bedsteads can be teamed with sturdy under-bed baskets, or even large drawers on castors. Habitat have Kalana under-bed drawers in a beautiful oak or wenge finish. They are intended for use with the matching bed, but would also look good with similar or contrasting materials. There's always a place for a classic divan base with drawers, but choose one with a plain fabric cover so you don't need to use a valance sheet and can reach the drawers easily. The latest idea is the lift-up bed, where the entire slatted base is raised, usually via a hydraulic system, to reveal a storage area the size of the bed. It's more disruptive than drawers, but an excellent place to stow out-of-season quilts and blankets.

Guest rooms can be put to greater use if the beds incorporate storage ideas - consider high-level beds with integral drawers or even a single bed with another mattress stored underneath: this is a good way to extend a single bedroom occasionally to make a double.

Individual Items

There's currently a trend for low, horizontal chests of drawers, good news if you want to store bulky items such as blankets or big jumpers. Low, wide drawers could even be used for shoes and handbags. But if floor space is limited, consider tall, narrow chests with lots of drawers - perfect for smaller items such as T-shirts and lingerie. Freestanding wardrobes are less popular then they used to be, but they are still a good choice, especially in a period home with alcoves either side of a chimney breast. Here, a wardrobe positioned in each alcove with the bed opposite and a sturdy set of bedside drawers will cover most storage needs.

Decorating the Vintage Style Kitchen

Many people confuse Vintage Style decorating with the Shabby Chic decorating style. However, there are subtle differences between the two styles.

Shabby Chic by its name has an atmosphere of benign neglect but still has an elegance surrounding it. Vintage style decorating, on the other hand, has the potential of bringing you back to your grandparent's home. It is similar in a way to retro style decorating. The furniture may resemble that found in the Shabby Chic home. It may be well loved with peeling paint and many dents and scratches from much use. The differences are not found so much in the furniture used in the two styles. What separates the styles are the accents and accessories found in the vintage style home.

Fabrics are most important in the Vintage Style Home

Fabrics are an important ingredient in creating this style. If you love the old cabbage roses of the 40's you are well on your way to enjoying this style. Calico prints from the 30's and 40's are also used extensively.
In the kitchen, oilcloth tablecloths are often used. Cookbooks were also often covered in oilcloth. Another favorite in the kitchen is the old roller towel rack. These often had linen calendar prints or beautiful floral linen prints on them.

Another kitchen staple was the terrycloth towel with the crocheted buttoned handle that could be attached to a drawer knob or the oven door handle. Dishcloths and towels often had hand crocheted edges to keep them from fraying and help them last longer.

Other Vintage Style Kitchen Decorating Ideas:

One idea for vintage decorators is to have a coat rack in the kitchen displaying a variety of colorful aprons from the 40's and 50's. There are many of these aprons available at flea markets for a very low price.

Along with the roller towel rack, there oftentimes was a wooden folding rack for trying dish towels attached to the wall. The slats would fold down into it when not in use and could be brought out for drying towels and dish cloths when needed.

Enameled pots, both blue speckled and white were found in vintage kitchens. The variety of tools used is huge and great fun to look for at flea markets. Pottery and stoneware were popular for table settings.

The Vintage Style Kitchen Accessories

Below is a list of items you might find in a kitchen decorated in the vintage style:

If you have a laundry area, a washboard could also be hung on the wall. To go along with that, everyone had clothespin bags that were hung from the clothesline, keeping the pins handy for use. Ironing boards were often covered with colorful calicos or cotton floral prints. Ticking was also a favorite fabric for covering ironing boards. Does anyone out there ever leave their ironing board out on display anymore?

These are some ideas for decorating your kitchen in the vintage style. Hopefully, by now you get the idea of the differences between shabby chic and vintage style.

As I mentioned earlier, these differences are subtle, but the change in ambiance is enormous.
Remember, shabby chic is discreet neglected elegance while vintage style is a nostalgic "remember your grandmother's house" atmosphere.

The Forgotten Rooms When Staging A Home For Sale - The Laundry Room

One of the often overlooked rooms when staging your home for sale is the laundry room. Most homeowners, even those who know that the home must be decluttered, neat and clean when their home is on the market, often forget about carrying this into the laundry room.

And those homeowners who don't have a laundry "room", but instead have their washer and dryer in the basement, fail to market this space in an attractive way.

The laundry room, whether or not it's an actual room, a closet, or an area in the basement, needs to be shown to its fullest potential.

That means that the homeowner needs to show the buyer that there is adequate room for storing laundry detergents, etc. and for perhaps other functions, such as folding clothes and ironing.

Here's a list of things you can do when staging your laundry "room":

At the very least, there should be shelving above the machines where the laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, dryer sheets, etc. should be neatly lined up. I like putting these items in storage baskets for a neater appearance. The tops and sides of the washer and dryer should be clean. Wipe up any spilled detergents. Also, if you are selling the machines along with your home, make sure you clean the underside of the washing machine lid and around the basket, as buyers will lift it up to look inside. The lint should be removed from the dryer lint screen. While a fresh coat of paint on the walls is highly recommended, at least wipe off scuff marks and dirt with Mr. Clean Magic Sponge. Especially when showing the home, there should be no clean or dirty laundry visible in the laundry room. Dirty laundry should be in the washing machine if not enough time to wash and dry, and clean laundry should be put away. Sometimes laundry rooms are used as another junk or storage room in the house. This implies to the buyer that there is not enough storage in the home. Try removing anything unrelated to the purpose of doing laundry. If you can't, make sure the items are neatly and attractively stowed away. Home sellers who have a washer and dryer in the basement often overlook the fact that this area needs to be staged. Don't let buyers think that the home is missing a laundry room. Make sure the area around the machines is sparkling clean to get rid of the "yuk" factor, especially in unfinished basements. Set up an ironing board and iron to show that this area is a laundry "room". If you are lucky enough to have a table or countertop to fold laundry, make sure this surface is free of any items. If there is enough room in the laundry room, set up an ironing board and iron to show that there is adequate room to do so. If the machines are in a closet without doors, an inexpensive way to hide them is to install a tension rod with drapery panels or even a tension shower rod and shower curtain.

In one laundry room we staged, the laundry room had a closet with louvered doors which housed the washing machine and the dryer, as well as shelving above it. The closet shelves held not only laundry detergent and related items, but also a lot of cleaning supplies and was very unsightly. We bought uniform, inexpensive, fabric-lined baskets to store these items. We also found two attractive canvas laundry hampers with the word "Laundry" embroidered on them in the pool house where they were going unused and brought them into the laundry room. We also removed an old table and clothing rack as these were taking up too much space in the room.

The result was a clean and organized laundry room where a buyer might actually not mind doing laundry.
