Closets and Workspaces - Make the Perfect Laundry Room

Having inadequate closet and work areas in the laundry room is one of the biggest reasons people often put off their laundry. After all, if there is no place to keep the clothes and other items and there is no place to work, the room becomes unorganized and a frustration. These rooms aren't intended to be relaxing or entertaining like other rooms of the house. They need to be functional. If you want to create the perfect laundry room, here are some hints and tips as to how to create closets and other items that will make the work easier and maybe even enjoyable.

A System For Each Job

The room needs to have an area for each step in the process, so think each step through and make notes of how you would like to tackle each task. Each time you say to yourself 'wish there was a bin here' or 'really need a table there' be sure to write that down. When you are done, there needs to be a system to collect and sort the clothing, wash and dry, folding, hanging, ironing, and storage.

Collection And Preparation

If you have a busy family and lots of clothing to work with, it is almost impossible to get everything done in one day. To battle this problem, have two laundry baskets for each person. This eliminates the hassle of having items thrown on the floor. In one of the laundry room closets, make four bins or have four spots that a bin can slide into. These are great for sorting heavy soil, lights, darks, and delicates.

Washing And Drying

While the actual washer and dryer are self-contained, the other items you use with them need some kind of organization. Closets above or beside and within reach of the machines can hold all of your supplies, including stain sticks, soap, softener, and a garbage for the lint that always appears out of nowhere. The shelving should allow you to separate the two processes and maximize the available space.

Since not all clothing can go through the washer and dryer, plan for these items. A large sink is great for soaking heavy soil, clothespins in jars and other items can go on a nearby shelf, and a rod is needed in one of the closets for items that require hang drying. A clothesline is also helpful. For items that have to dry flat, have a wide wire rack installed. Have extra baskets and containers for items that are left in pants pockets.

Folding, Hanging, And Storage

One must have in the space is a clear and comfortable table that you can use to fold clothing. In small spaces where you may not have the room, have a slide out or fold down surface. If you have a customized pad made to lie across your table, it can double as your ironing board. Placing this surface close to your dryer will cut down on the distance you need to carry the clothes and eliminates the number of baskets sitting in the way.

Be sure to have a basket or container to hold things such as odd socks. Lastly, make a place to store your iron, starch, and other supplies. When dealing with the folded laundry, you can place them directly into their now-empty baskets or have a shelf designated for each member of the household where they can pick up their clothing.

Whether you own a big house in the country or a small apartment in Chicago, closet systems with a smart design are just the first step to a functional and easy-to-use laundry room. If you are having trouble deciding what you would like to have, don't be afraid to walk yourself through the process with a pen and paper. The perfect laundry room is not a standard design. It should meet your unique needs in order to be an efficient and productive space.
